Why is it significant to conduct pooja for Moksha (liberation) of souls of one’s ancestors in Kashi?

There is a belief that when leaves the prana and the final rituals are done in the city of Kashi attains liberation. This is not to mean that everyone necessarily has to go to Kashi to die and attain liberation. Kashi is also called Varanasi and gets its name by “ Varuna “ and “ Asi” the meeting place of two rivers. From a spiritual perspective, the 6th chakra ( in between the eye brows) is called “Agna chakra” , the meeting point of the Ida ( represented by Varuna) , the Pingala ( represented by Asi) and the Sushumna Naadis (energy channels in the human body). So if one’s prana( life force energy) is steadily established in this region at the time of death, then one attains liberation. This is what is truly conveyed by these sayings. The word for city Kashi has another meaning. Kashi means one that is overflowing with knowledge. In the ancient days, it was a great seat of knowledge and learning. In those days, there were scholars in every street of this great city who would go about debating and explaining the meanings of the scriptures. It was said that the city was so enriched with knowledge that even animals and birds would discuss knowledge. So one who sits in the company of such wise and enlightened ones surely attains liberation just by listening to the knowledge.
