Ayurveda translates to science of life. It is as scientific as the allopathic medicine.
Some of the reasons I think why it is not popular:-
1) Time: Typically Ayurveda consumes a lot more time to give the desired results than its allopathic counterpart. The reason for this is Ayurveda treats the root cause of any symptom and not just the symptom. Eg Headache : Allopathic doctors generally recommend pain killers. But ayurveda tries to understand the cause behind headache and cures the root problem behind it.
2) Complexity: The medication is typically complex consisting out various coction. For e.g one need to consume the medicine using hot water or milk or honey etc. Not in all the case but in some common cases it is true.
3) Diet: You are asked to follow strict diet to get the desired results. Like avoiding caffeine etc, not taking too much spicy or salty food and so on as the case may be.
4) Fast paced society : Since the current society is very fast paced, very few people have the patience to follow a strict process to get the complete cure. We need the cure to be as simple as gulping a tablet.
5) Emergency: Although Ayurveda has surgery as part of its aspect too, in case of emergency it is allopathic medicine and surgery that definitely has an upper hand.
6) Prejudice: Prejudice towards the old system. Its a typical Indian mentally for reasons like lack of self respect, lack of pride in our culture . We also tend to appreciate the west more than what gem is present in our own back yard.
My recommendation is to go for allopathy in case of emergency but for long term cure free of side effects its always best to use Ayurveda. Take best of both the worlds and don't be prejudiced.
