The soul/spirit/individual consciousness ( mind + impressions( memories) ) gets separated from the body at the time of death - Just like the air going out of a balloon, the mind gets separated from the body. It is said the soul still retains the sense of sight and hearing for some time and therefore for the first few hours or even days, it is in a state of confusion. The soul by itself cannot express but needs a physical body, but the physical body it gets separated from will appear very gross to the soul. Therefore it is recommended to either bury or burn the body within a few hours of death. The more desire, cravings, feverishness the mind has, the more attached a soul will be to the physical plane. So after few days, the last rites is performed ( in Hinduism) using sesame seeds saying “All your desires are very small like sesame seeds, you just move on, continue your journey, be satisfied”. The soul gets guided to the astral plane. Death is like deep sleep. If we observe, the last thought that comes to us before we sleep and the first thought we have when we get up in the morning, they are the same. So the last thought or the most intense desire forms the vibration or impression the soul takes after death. The soul remains in that deep sleep/rest for hours or days or months or years. The universe is full of vibrations and every moment the vibrations change. When the mathematical expression of the universal vibrations matches the individual souls vibration, the soul comes back and takes birth on the physical plane. ( one can get a glimpse of these vibrations in the horoscope) There are numerous possibilities a soul can land in and what we see is just the tip of the iceberg. There are physical world, astra world, causal word etc and many such planes of existence all in the same place but exhibiting different expressions, vibrations which our naked eye cannot perceive. Just one such scenario is explained above as an example.
