Brahma means "Infinite". Charya means "Moving". So Brahmacharya is "moving in infinity".
What does this mean? When a child enters adulthood, especially in the teenage years it get bombarded with lot of changes- hormonal changes in the body, It gets curious about sex, teenagers gets confused to strike a balance with emotions and intellect, they start taking more responsibilities, mind wavers here and there due to too many distractions.
To give proper direction to the child, the highest knowledge is given saying " You are Brahman" , "You are the infinite" by initiating into Gayatri mantra. This mantra is a prayer asking the divine to give right thoughts and direction to the intellect.
So when the child enters teenage/ adulthood it is initiated to Brahmacharya meaning you are the infinite and let good thought guide your intellect. Don't get stuck in small things like jealousy, lust, anger, hatred in stead think big.
So celibacy is not a practice, its a happening. When one enters Brahmacharya and gets a taste of higher bliss, small things don't bother him anymore.
It is not just a phase of life even adults can be initiated into Brahmacharya, encouraging them not to get stuck in smaller desires. Wise men, true saints are one with higher bliss by conditioning their mind towards higher goal.
